Witmarsum glacial striations T

 his is a record of the great glaciation that occurred during the Early Carboniferous and the Early Permian Ages (360-270 million years ago), when Gondwana was covered by thick layers of ice. The paleoenvironmental site consists of pavement striated and grooved by the movement of glaciers which carried rocky detritus that both scratched and smoothed the substrate, like huge sanders.

     The site is only a few square meters in dimension, and is preserved at the top of a layer of sandstone in the Witmarsum Colony, a municipality of Palmeira. It was taken into possession by Coordenação do Patrimônio Cultural da Secretaria da Cultura do Paraná, and is one of the Brazilian geological sites as defined by the Brazilian Commission for Geological and Paleobiological Sites.
