opographical projection separating the First and Second Paranaense Plateaus. It stretches about 260 km between the States of São Paulo and Paraná, and rises to hights of 100-200 meters, but can reach 450 meters in the Guartelá Canyon region, and median heights of 1100-1200 meters. Its curvilinear configuration also is associated with the structure of the Ponta Grossa Arch. Because of its monumantal size, it is easily seen in aerial phptographs, satellite images, and topographical maps.

The Devonian Escarpment is supported by the Furnas Formation, which dates to the Devonian Period (400-360 million years ago), but its geomorphological features are much more recent than the underlying rock, which suggests that the Escarpment is less than 65 million years olds.

The Devonian Escarpment Environmental Protection Area was created in 1992. Covering almost 10,000 acres, it is the State of Paraná’s largest Conservation Unit, and integrates thirteen municipalities of Campos Gerais.
